Imposing an unfamiliar plant would interfere and go against restoration efforts.
While bamboo is known for its many benefits, it is not supposed to be imposed on different geographical areas where bamboo does not grow naturally, such as Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). Replication of the Mentawai project in Soe, Kefamenanu, and Ponu starts with a feasibility study that needs to find alternatives when bamboo is not a familiar nor the most suitable source.
Aside from biomass-based power plant development in NTT, new plantations will be encouraged to improve degraded land. Planting Gamal (Gliricidia Sepium), a familiar and abundant source in NTT will be beneficial not only for land restoration, but also for livestock feed. For Ponu in particular, a biomass based power plant project could restore critically damaged land as large as 7000ha by planting the biomass using an intercropping system.
