Clean Power Indonesia is the first company in Asia Pacific that implemented the concept of community-based biomass distributed power for rural and island communities in Indonesia.
CPI was founded in 2012 by Jaya Wahono, a fervent advocate of renewable energy development in Indonesia, and his partner Richard Lasut. It has now grown into a team that champions renewable energy efforts throughout Indonesia, initiating and developing green prosperity projects in 3T areas.
Green prosperity is inspired by what CPI calls “Listrik Gotong Royong”. Gotong royong is the Indonesian concept of carrying a burden (gotong) as a community (royong), with each member of the community contributing to the tasks at hand. In the realm of electrification, the gotong royong approach is threefold:
Assessment and understanding of electrification requirements. It is never one size fits all in the electricity provision process. By assessing and tuning into the needs before constructing, it becomes clear that some locations and communities would merely require an off grid system that is renewable based, with credit access to electricity saving tools.
Connecting the dots. The development of a power plant should be able to meet other infrastructural developments and cannot be a stand-alone effort. The increase of health, educational and industrial facilities benefit the communities and must be realized with an adequate supply of electricity.
Affordability and sustainability. The work does not stop once access to electricity has been provided because access is not the sole purpose of electrification. Gotong royong is a collaborative effort for a long-term good, and a power plant should provide long-term benefits to the users in a sustainable ecosystem. Can the electricity remain affordable and reliable in the long run? And how can it improve not just the living standards but also the livelihood and the environment of the surrounding communities?
CPI believes that communities are at the center of any green energy effort, and that they should be experiencing an improved wellbeing that covers their living conditions (access to reliable electricity and to economic opportunities) and their environment (restored and habitable land conditions).
